            Windows Operating Systems

In a shocking report released by the security firm, Proofpoint, there are about 500,000 PCs in US, which have been affected by the Qbot botnet, which has now become a major cause of concern. According to the reports, most of the PCs affected are either Windows XP or Windows 7. According to Windows XP help blogs, a group of Russian hackers is behind Qbot and their recent actions are proving to be highly dangerous.

The major news about Qbot attack first came up when it attacked the online systems of JPMorgan Chase, one of the biggest banks in the country. Botnets have been around for quite some time and the Russian hackers behind it have built a sophisticated business model with it, which is hard to crack. The group has kept a low profile and therefore, has not been under the check of security firms. This has helped them to expand and build a vast empire.

The researchers say, “With 500,000 infected clients stealing online banking account credentials for as many as 800,000 online banking accounts, this cybercrime group has the potential for tremendous profits.” This means, a large number of people are under the threat of their bank accounts being compromised.

So, what are the steps that one could take to prevent this threat? As of now, one of the important remedial measures to avoid this threat is to avoid the outdated operating system, Windows XP. Microsoft ended the support for Windows XP since April, 2014. Ever since, Microsoft has been constantly urging its users to move out of this operating system and install any of the newer operating systems from the company.

Windows 8.1

                Windows Online Support

Microsoft released Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 after the release of Windows XP. However, many of the Windows XP users were happy with the operating system and did not make an upgrade. Microsoft had announced about the end of support date before many months and had extended the last date of support.

However, many users were reluctant to make an upgrade even after repeated pleas. Now, with the Botnet attack on online accounts, it is high time that all the existing users of Windows XP made an upgrade of their operating systems to any of the newer ones.

Users have various options to choose from. According to Windows XP help blogs, upgrading to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 is the best thing to do to avoid the Botnet attacks.
